The Bar

We may be big – lots of rooms, lots of little corners – but the bar is still the heart and soul of our Northumberland pub. We’re happy for you to just come in for a drink and a natter – or just a quiet drink and the newspaper. If it’s chilly outside, warm yourself at the fire – we have several snugs and a fire in each – and, if you’re peckish, order a tasty snack. Of course, you can have a full meal, too.

There are dominoes, jigsaw puzzles and daily papers – special events on some nights – and always a smiling face behind the bar. Our regulars have become firm friends. We’re dog-friendly, too.

Four real ales – including our custom-made St Mary’s Ale from Northumberland’s Rigg & Furrow Brewery – are always available. Craft keg beers, ciders, speciality lagers, over 10 wines by-the-glass, premium gins and a range of around 20 whiskies are some of our highlights. Plus we have a good choice of locally made soft drinks.

All our meals – from lunch to dinner – are available in the bar as well as in the pub’s other eating areas. If you just fancy a little something to keep you going we have a range of proper, old-fashioned bar snacks such as home-made black pudding Scotch egg and pork quavers.

We love dogs. Sometimes it seems there are more drinkers in the bar with four legs than two. There’s plenty of room as we have several snugs. (We just ask you not to let your four-legged friend wander into the dining areas.) Water is provided in all dog friendly rooms.

Dear Family and Friends of St. Mary’s Inn,

We are absolutely committed to the well-being, health and safety of our guests and staff.

The COVID-19 virus is rapidly spreading throughout the world and each Government is following their own strategy to minimise the impact on their people.

The UK Government have advised most recently that people should avoid pubs, theatres, clubs, and by implication, restaurants, though businesses are left to make their own operational choices based on their unique circumstances.

This is a rapidly changing situation and in order to ensure we put our guests and staff at the front of our considerations we have made the decision to temporarily close the Inn effective from 19:00hrs, Sunday, 22nd March 2020.

We will keep everyone advised as the situation changes and look forward to welcoming you all back at the earliest possible time and in accordance with future Government and WHO advice.

We wish the people of the village of Stannington, our guests who travel so far to see us, and our loyal staff and your families well through this difficult time.

The St. Mary’s Inn team
