We have put together some FAQs, to help inform your decisions when booking events and overnight stays at St Marys Inn:

Can we start booking rooms in the Inn?

Yes, we are now taking bookings for July onwards. We are currently adding new systems into St Mary’s, so confirmation of bookings and all other details will take place over Facebook messenger at the moment.

When can we see the new menu?

Our head chef is currently building our new and improved menu, with feedback from our customers in mind. When this is finalised, we will publish this on Facebook and on the website.

Can you book events with St Mary’s?

Yes – we can reserve bookings, but without menu or completed renovations we can only go into so much detail regarding the details of the day. Therefore, these rooms should be booked at your discretion.

When is the planned reopening date?

With the current renovations taking place, there may be delays with the reopening. With this in mind the current projected opening should be w/c June 21st, and we are currently on track to meet this date.

What are the new additions at St Mary’s Inn?

We have quite a few new and exciting features coming to you upon reopening, we have already announced that we will be running the Euro 2021 games from the sports lounge, among other things. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more announcements.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you back to St Mary’s Inn as soon as we can. We hope to see you all very soon!

Kind regards,

The St Mary’s Team

We’ve been named the best pub in the North East at the 2019 National Pub and Bar awards – and we are so proud to serve Northumberland!

We are so honoured to have won the award for Best Pub in the North East. After winning the first award, Best Pub in Northumberland, our head chef Chris Cheek headed to London for the award ceremony on the 22nd of May. It was here, and to our surprise, that our award was upgraded to Best Pub in the North East!

The National Pub & Bar Awards aims to put the finest on-trade businesses across the UK in the spotlight, showcasing just how diverse and creative the hospitality industry really is. The announcement of this year’s 94 county champions showcases the level of quality being delivered to pub and bar visitors every day of the week.

We couldn’t have done it without you all – of course.
It is through the support of our guests that we were even considered – so a very big thank you to you all!

We also want to give a big shout out and congratulations to The Church Inn in Mobberley, Cheshire! Well done on winning the National Pub and Bar Awards 2019!

Whilst the conventional wisdom posits that golf was invented in 15th Century Scotland, dig a little deeper and one’ll find that it has hotly contested origins.

Some would have it that golf is the decedent of the Roman game, paganica: in which players competed at hitting a stuffed leather ball with a crooked stick. In this version, golf would be the modern-day legacy of the Roman annexation of Europe dating back to the 1st Century BC!

Then there is the Asian challenge to golf’s ancestry. The game of chuiwan (“chui” meaning “striking” and “wan” meaning “small ball”) was Chinese game, played between the 8th and 14th Centuries. “The Autumn Banquest”, a Ming Dynasty scroll dating back to 1368, depicts a member of the Chinese Imperial Court swinging golf club-like utensil at a minute ball: with the object of sinking it into a hole! This theory would have it that chuiwan spread to Europe during the Middle Ages and was hijacked into golf.

Then, there’s cambuca from England (a 12th Century game); chambot from France; the Persian game of chaugán; and/or kolven, played annually in the Netherlands, involving a ball and curved bats, to commemorate the capture of the assassin of Floris V in 1296! Take your pick!!

The first record of the modern, Scottish game is James II’s banning of it in 1457 – as an unwelcome distraction to archery! To many, the Old Course – a links course – at St Andrews, dating back to 1574, is considered a site of pilgrimage. And this was modified, from 22 to 18 holes, in 1764.

St Mary’s Inn, Stannington, nestles in the Southern portion of Northumberland and, near the links land of the coast, has great proximity to several courses: Bedlington, Blyth and Longhirst – to name but a few. With 11 bedrooms, it is an ideal base to stay and play them all and the Bar and Restaurant make it an ideal place to play the 19th hole.

From the South:

Some Satnav systems will direct you to use a minor road involving a sharp left turn from the A1(M) between the Stannington Village and Morpeth exits. This left turn is not the best route to St Mary’s Inn from the A1(M). Instead, we suggest that you use the Morpeth/Clifton exit which is the next exit to the north after about one mile. At the end of the slip road from the A1(M), take the left turn signposted St Mary’s Inn/White House Farm which will take you through the hamlet of Glororum to a T-junction where there is a further signpost. Take the left turn again and descend the hill for about one mile to the entrance to St Mary’s Park which is a sharp junction to the right. Take this right turn and the road ahead will fork. You should take the left fork – St Mary’s Inn is about 400 yards ahead of you on the right

From the North: Come off the A1 at the Stannington/Netherton Park exit where you will approach a double roundabout. At the first roundabout take the third exit which is signposted for Stannington. At the second roundabout go straight over, again signposted for Stannington. You will then come into Stannington village and will very quickly come to a mini-roundabout. Take the right fork at this roundabout which is signposted for St Mary’s Hospital. On the right-hand side of the road, you will see a brown tourist board sign for St Mary’s Inn. Turn right at this sign and follow this road (Church Road) for about 2 3/4 miles. On your right-hand side you will pass the post office and Stannington First School and on your left you will see St Mary’s Church. After the church, the road will then become a country road for about two miles when the road will bend to your right but on your left, you will then come to the entrance for the new development St Mary’s Park. Drive into the development and the road ahead will fork. Take the left fork and St Mary’s Inn is about 400 yards ahead on the right.

TRAI ANFIELD : THE TROPHY ROOM

“Merely seeing a species is rarely meaningful – what matters for me is the quality of encounter for both the photographer and the subject – that’s what stays with us for life.”

Trai Anfield is a natural history photographer, film maker and presenter based in North East England. She began her working life as a Countryside Ranger, then graduated as a Met Office meteorologist, before being recruited by the BBC. Trai is best known in the north east for her 10 years as BBC Look North weather forecaster, environment reporter and film maker.

In 2012 she moved on to present BBC Radio 4’s flagship natural history programme, The Living World, and to set up her ethically inspired production company Enlightened Media. Through Enlightened Photographic Safaris she also leads photography expeditions around the world.

Trai’s ongoing concerns around climate change and species conservation are evident throughout her portfolio, and she attributes the development of her photographic style to the intimacy and involvement she seeks with each subject. The powerful dynamics of connection she creates between her viewer and subject are striking, and sometimes unsettling, but each image is ultimately a celebration of the species and the individual.

“I hope viewers will experience my photographs in the same way that my guests experience safari with me: it’s not about careering around the wild places frantically tickling species off a list, but quietly considering each animal we are privileged to encounter, gaining more understanding of its nature, behaviour and circumstance, and trying to convey something of its essence and its experience of the world. Merely seeing a species is rarely meaningful – what matters to me s the qualify of encounter for both the photographer and the subject – that’s what stays with us for life”.

Talking about this exhibition Trai says “With the Trophy Room portraits I wanted to invite comparison between the skill required in wildlife photography and those required for trophy hunting. My challenge to all trophy hunters is pick up a camera instead! We use the same field craft, and experience the same adrenaline rush from proximity to the animals. But to my mind the technical and artistic aspects of photography mean that more skill and understanding is required to successfully photograph an endangered species than simply to shoot it. For me photography offers a sustainable alternative to trophy hunting, and ultimately a far more satisfying experience for all involved.”

Enlightened Media and Enlightened Photographic Safaris support numerous charities through their Community and Conservation Commitment. The company donates or produces photograph and films for organisations they support on a not for profit basis. To date in 2016 films for Lifespan, St Oswald’s Hospice and the Children’s Heart Unit Fund have helped raise over £625,000. Trai is currently planning two further charitable partnerships for autumn 2016: to donate an educative film to the Kwazulu Natal Black Rhino Project in South Africa, and to collaborate with Gorilla Doctors in Rwanda. Trai is also a Patron of Friends of Red Kites, Lifespan and ME North East here in the UK.
